Intro to Ashtanga Yoga

Join us for our in-depth Beginner’s Intro to start your Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga practice at our new home- Ashtanga Yoga Edinburgh.

It is suitable for:

• The complete beginner

• Those wanting to start a Mysore style Ashtanga practice

• Those new to Ashtanga- making a transition from other disciplines

• More established students keen to relearn foundational aspects of practice again.

In this course we introduce the basics of ashtanga vinyasa yoga: pranayama (breathing), vinyasa (movement breath system) and āsana (postures).

The intro includes a short introduction to yogic theory and philosophy which prepares the foundations for learning. Followed by detailed instruction on the fundamental movements of Surya Namaskar A, B and the beginning of the standing asanas in a pace and way relevant to just you.

The intensive finishes with a Q and A so that any questions about our continuing practice at AYE's Mysore program will be answered.

"Mysore" style lends itself to teaching 1:1 within a group setting so be assured that your teacher will meet you where you are at. These intensives will be capped at 8 people so individual instruction can be given. All abilities, experience and bodies welcome.

These Sunday intensives are run by our Mysore Program Director- Emma Isokivi.

As a part of this intensive you will be offer a free 1 class trial to any Mysore style class after, 50% off the 1st months Mysore membership and access to our Beginners Resource pack.

Ashtanga Yoga Immersion with Emma Isokivi 20-21st August 2022, Skye, Scotland.

-----------------------------------------------

Saturday:
08:00-10:00
“Progressive Primary Series”
During this guided full led primary series you’ll find detailed instructions on breath, postures and how to understand the vinyasa count. The two hour session will work progressively through the primary series of the Ashtanga Yoga system with modifications and options available for those less or more familiar with the practice.

This session is ideal for those who have some experience with yoga and even the Ashtanga Vinyasa practice.

Lunchbreak: 10:00- 11:45

Saturday:
11:45-15:00
"Beyond Navasana, exploring the second half of primary series"

Often the overlooked part of the primary series, due to class time constraints, energy or being "stuck" in early āsanas means that some folks never get to dig into this incredible portion of largely joyful work. Expect to rock and roll, forward fold, balance on your arms and be a little brave. This workshop style class will involve dynamic movement, exploration and breaking down the āsanas (postures) and key themes of the second half of primary series and how to integrate them into your regular practice. There will be lots of "mapping back" to earlier areas of practice and looking at how it all links together, so if you have never looked at this section of practice you can still take lots of benefit from this session.

This session is ideal for those who have some experience with yoga.

The last 45 minutes of the class will introduce some simple chanting and philosophy, 14:45-15:00.

Sunday:

08:00-11:00
“Moving into Mysore style”.
During this session you will get a taste of how the Ashtanga Vinyasa system is traditionally taught. Mysore style means 1:1 teaching within a group setting which invites practitioners to move towards a more meditative and independent way of approaching your Ashtanga practice.

There will be a guided element to this session that will move into a fully supported 1:1 style of teaching that will allow you to explore more deeply.
Depending on the group size, the group may be split into two start groups, so don’t expect your class to be 3 hours long! This is the timeframe which you will be allocated within.

This session is ideal for all levels. Your ability to be able to get up and down on/off the floor with some ease means you may be able to participate in the guided part more easily, but the Mysore style element will facilitate space and learning of all abilities and bodies.

Lunch break 11:00- 12:30

12:30-14:30
"Backbending and shoulder sweetness"
During this both dynamic and restorative workshop you will explore ways to creatively find space in your upper back, front line of your torso and also often bound shoulder girdle. Looking both at anatomical movements and how we can move safely and painfree into moving your spine and body into both flexion and extension. Expect lots of research and breathwork as we navigate how the chest moves so you can liberate upwards!

This session is open to all levels and styles of practitioners.

Costs:
Early bird (before 20th July) complete weekend: £80
Complete weekend: £90
Individual sessions:
Saturday & Sunday morning: £20 each
Saturday afternoon: £30
Sunday afternoon: £25
